日本北海道香桂是傳說中代表月亮的樹，在日本的《萬葉集》中也有記載。日本北海道香桂的葉子呈心形，落葉會散發出淡淡清香，給人一種高潔的形象。在日本，甚至有樹齡達到2000年的桂樹成為神社的天然紀念物。
